Interstate 680 runs directly through Pleasant Hill, and California State Route 4 provides east-west connections through Contra Costa County. These two major corridors mean that residents can work throughout the Bay Area—in San Francisco, Oakland, Silicon Valley, or the growing employment centers along the I-680 corridor itself—while living in a residential community. Many Pleasant Hill households include at least one commuter whose job is 20 to 45 minutes away by car, feasible because the freeway network makes long commutes routine.

Freeway proximity cuts both ways for household finances. The commute enables employment opportunities that would otherwise require moving closer to job centers, but it also means households are vulnerable to transportation disruption. A car accident, mechanical failure, or loss of driving ability on a commuter puts strain on the household's finances and logistics. More significantly, it means the household has optimized its housing choice—accepting lower costs or more space in a distant residential community—in exchange for a longer commute.

Households that have built their housing and job choices around freeway commuting depend heavily on the working-age adults' ability to continue that commute for 20 or 30 years. If a primary earner cannot work, the household faces not just lost income but a renegotiation of where they can afford to live and whether the working spouse can bridge the gap alone. Term insurance in 20- or 30-year increments is designed for exactly this scenario: protecting the years when the household's location and stability rest on two incomes and access to distant employment.
